Natural gas production from Türkiye’s Black Sea “Sakarya” gas field has significantly reduced the country’s energy import costs.

Thanks to supply from the field, Türkiye has saved approximately $2 billion in natural gas imports.

The discovery of the country’s largest offshore gas field was announced in July 2020, while the first gas deliveries to the national grid began in September 2023.

By the end of 2023, production from the “Sakarya” field reached 337 million cubic meters. This figure rose to 1.66 billion cubic meters in 2024, 3 billion cubic meters last year, and an additional 1 billion cubic meters in the first five months of 2026.

The field’s reserves are estimated at 785 billion cubic meters, valued at approximately $250 billion.

Since the start of production, Türkiye has extracted around 6 billion cubic meters of domestic gas, worth nearly $2 billion at market prices, contributing to reduced dependence on energy imports.

According to official data, Türkiye imported $21.2 billion worth of natural gas last year. Imports came mainly from Russia (43%), the United States (20%), Azerbaijan (12%), Iran (11%), Algeria (7%), and other countries (7%).
