The Kur-Araz Rivers Dam Operation Authority under the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency continues urgent structural measures in 2026, as in previous years, to safeguard vulnerable territories from seasonal floods and flash mudflows.
Sea-news.az reports citing official information provided by the agency.
The authority currently maintains more than 1,382 kilometers of protective levees and embankments on its balance sheet. This network encompasses 936 kilometers along the Kur River, 134 kilometers along the Araz River, and 312 kilometers defending areas adjacent to mountain streams and inland lakes. A total of 123 hydraulic control structures are positioned along these protective lines, all kept in full operational readiness. Embankment reinforcement and channel-clearing operations remain ongoing across the river basins under the authority’s jurisdiction. Furthermore, to mitigate hazards caused by active bank erosion at sharp river bends, stone-and-concrete bank protection works covering 21,689 linear meters were completed between 2012 and 2025. Since the start of 2026, scheduled routine maintenance has achieved 39 kilometers of levee repairs and rock-cutting operations, alongside 16 kilometers of riverbed clearing.
In the preceding year, protective operations accomplished the repair of 125 kilometers of dams along the Kur, Araz, and mountain rivers, more than 31 kilometers of rock cutting, and 36 kilometers of riverbed dredging. Additionally, 1,680 linear meters of stone-and-concrete revetment were constructed in areas vulnerable to rockslides to protect structural dam foundations. Aligned with seasonal operational protocols, the authority is currently working under a heightened readiness regime to prepare for potential spring and summer flood surges along designated river sectors. Based on continuous monitoring data, ongoing levee reconstruction, structural restoration, and rock-slope cutting aim to ensure safe, unimpeded floodwater discharge. Maintenance crews are also clearing wild vegetation, brushwood, and trees from dam embankments, slope faces, buffer zones, and active river channels where blockages could restrict water flow.
The Kur-Araz Rivers Dam Operation Authority manages infrastructure across 21 administrative districts of Azerbaijan, including Gazakh, Aghstafa, Barda, Yevlakh, Aghdash, Goychay, Zardab, Ujar, Aghjabadi, Kurdamir, Aghsu, Imishli, Bilasuvar, Sabirabad, Beylagan, Fuzuli, Saatli, Shirvan, Hajigabul, Salyan, and Neftchala.
