An oil tanker navigating the eastern section of the Strait of Hormuz has caught fire after striking a naval mine.

Sea-news.az reports citing Interfax and a statement by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

“A few hours ago, an oil tanker that had turned off its automatic identification system attempted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz via an unauthorized eastern route. The vessel struck a mine, triggering a fire on board,” the statement read.

Other independent sources have not yet confirmed the report.

The IRGC reiterated that Tehran considers ship transits along routes not approved by Iran to be illegal.
