An 18-year-old resident of Papua New Guinea, Luka Rahan, has been rescued by fishermen after remaining stranded for 41 days in the Pacific Ocean.

Sea-news.az reports citing Australia’s ABC television channel.

According to reports, the youth set off on a fishing trip with his cousin from the north of Bougainville Island in September. Due to an engine failure, their boat caught an open current and began to drift. The vessel was also missing an anchor.

Suffering from severe dehydration, Rahan was discovered on Tuesday, October 27, by fishermen from Kiribati. His boat was spotted nearly 2,000 kilometers away from his home, drifting between the islands of Tarawa and Maiana.

In total, the young man was left at the mercy of the waves for 41 days. He was subsequently transported to a hospital in Tarawa. Regrettably, his cousin who accompanied him on the voyage did not survive.
