The Day of Restoration of Independence in Azerbaijan

28

October 18 is celebrated as the Day of Restoration of Independence in Azerbaijan.

Sea-news.az recalls that on May 28, 1918, the National Council of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic proclaimed Azerbaijan’s independence to the world by signing the Declaration of Independence, carrying forward the centuries-old statehood traditions of our people.

Within a short period, Azerbaijan’s first parliament and government were formed, state symbols were established, borders were defined, and crucial measures in state-building were implemented.

Significant steps were taken toward securing the Republic’s recognition as a subject of the international relations system and protecting national interests on the diplomatic stage.

The laws enacted by the newly functioning parliament played a fundamental role in consolidating national independence, ensuring political, economic, and cultural development, and establishing democratic principles in the country. The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which existed for only 23 months, exerted a profound influence on the formation of democratic traditions in the Muslim East…

Following the dissolution of the USSR, of which Azerbaijan was part since 1920, the Constitutional Act “On the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan” was adopted on October 18, 1991.

The Constitutional Act referenced the Declaration of Independence dated May 28, 1918, and the Declaration of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated August 30, 1991, “On the Restoration of the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan,” establishing that the Republic of Azerbaijan is the successor to the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.

Thus, under the Constitutional Act “On the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan,” the people of Azerbaijan restored their independence on October 18, 1991.

Today, as an independent state, Azerbaijan determines its own foreign policy, and our country is spoken of positively from prestigious international rostrums.

Azerbaijan has further enhanced its significance after achieving a decisive victory over Armenia in the 44-day Patriotic War.

Today, nations around the globe accept Azerbaijan as a country that creates new realities and reckon with it on matters of energy and security.
