The Royal Navy’s sole icebreaking patrol vessel, “HMS Protector,” has been rendered operational out of service due to severe technical failures.
Sea-news.az reports citing “The Daily Telegraph,” malfunctions were detected in two of the vessel’s engines as it was departing the UK, forcing “HMS Protector” to return to the Devonport naval base. Royal Navy specialists are currently evaluating repair options.
If the ship cannot be repaired, the Royal Navy risks remaining without a specialized patrol and research vessel in the Antarctic until 2030—a situation sources have described as a “catastrophic failure.” Reports suggest the breakdown may have stemmed from inadequate maintenance. “HMS Protector” primarily operates in the South Atlantic, supporting the Falkland Islands and maintaining the UK’s presence in Antarctica.
