The Pacific Ocean warmed to record levels under the influence of El Niño

In the Pacific Ocean, where the El Niño climate pattern is unfolding, water temperatures have exceeded the 30°C threshold for the first time this week.

Sea-news.az reports the data was reported by the “Climate Reanalyzer” portal, developed by the Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine (USA).

Researchers noted that such temperatures have never been recorded since measurements began, as previous “super events” in 1997 and 2015 did not push ocean temperatures beyond 29°C. Meanwhile, the global average ocean surface temperature reached 21.08°C.

The World Meteorological Organization forecasts that El Niño will peak in December and persist until February 2027. Scientists warn that the number of extreme heat days will increase by 44% compared to typical years, potentially posing severe risks to the elderly and vulnerable populations worldwide.
