6 Years Pass Since the Liberation of Sugovushan and Talish

Today marks six years since the liberation of Sugovushan and Talish villages from occupation.

Sea-news.az reports that on the first day of the counter-offensive operation launched by the Azerbaijani Army on September 27, 2020, in response to the full-scale provocation of the Armenian armed forces along the frontline, the enemy’s forward defense line, which had been fortified over the years and called “impenetrable,” was breached. Six villages in the Jabrayil and Fuzuli districts, as well as a number of strategic heights in the Agdara and Murovdag directions, were liberated.

Continuing the successful “Iron Fist” operation under the leadership of the Victorious Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, the Azerbaijani Army liberated the strategically vital villages of Madagiz and Talish on the northern front on October 3, which at the time were within the administrative territory of the Tartar district. The Head of State announced this on his social media account, restoring the historical name of Madagiz and stating that the settlement was renamed Sugovushan.

Thus, Sugovushan and Talish villages, which were occupied by Armenian armed forces in the early 1990s, gained their freedom on the seventh day of the Patriotic War.

Sugovushan and Talish were of great strategic importance for the Azerbaijani Army. With the liberation of Sugovushan, key supply routes came under Azerbaijan’s control. During the combat, the Armenian army suffered severe losses in personnel and equipment.

The strategic significance of the heights surrounding Sugovushan and Talish made the liberation of these settlements particularly vital. Taking control of these areas enabled the Azerbaijani Army to maintain oversight over the surrounding regions.

In 2023, Sugovushan and Talish villages were transferred from the administrative jurisdiction of the Tartar district to the Agdara district.
