The 182-metre Baltic Star, en route from Spain to Tuzla, Istanbul, experienced an engine failure for an as-yet undetermined reason while transiting the Dardanelles near Cape Nara.
After the vessel lost its ability to proceed under its own power, the captain immediately reported the incident via radio to the Dardanelles Vessel Traffic Services Centre.
Following the report, the Directorate General of Coastal Safety quickly dispatched a pilot and the Kurtarma-13 and Kurtarma-17 tugboats to the area. Other vessels transiting the strait were informed about the incident and warned to proceed with caution in order to ensure navigational and life safety.
