New Transit Route

State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) is considering options for transiting diesel fuel produced in Uzbekistan to world markets via the Kulevi terminal located on the Black Sea coast of Georgia.

Sea-news.az reports that Toghrul Kocharli, Head of SOCAR’s International Business Development Department, stated this.

“Currently, ‘SOCAR Trading’ loads naphtha from Uzbekistan and delivers it to Black Sea ports. The product under consideration is diesel. We are talking about diesel fuel produced in Uzbekistan. If an agreement is reached, this product will also be exported through our terminal in Kulevi,” he noted.

The head of department noted that unlike Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, which are long-standing business partners of Azerbaijan in transiting national petroleum products to international markets, cooperation with Uzbekistan in this area began only in the current year.

“In fact, the foundation for joint work was laid much earlier—within the framework of the three-year ‘Turan’ energy project established between the parties. However, its practical implementation and active operational activities began specifically this year,” T. Kocharli added.

It should be noted that the Kulevi terminal and seaport operated by SOCAR commenced operations on May 16, 2008. The terminal is designed for the transportation of hydrocarbons and petrochemical products.

Services at the Kulevi terminal include receiving hydrocarbons and petrochemical products via railway, transfer into storage tanks, storage, loading onto vessels, and the operation of port facilities.
