Official Beginning of Autumn in Azerbaijan

52

Autumn officially arrived in Azerbaijan on September 23 at 04:05 Baku time.

Sea-news.az according to information provided to AZERTAC to the Department of Astrophysics at Baku State University, as this moment occurs, day and night become almost equal in length, while the Sun rises due east and sets due west. However, due to atmospheric refraction and the angular size of the solar disk, daylight does not last exactly 12 hours and remains slightly longer than the night.

During its annual motion, the Sun crosses the celestial equator and moves from the Northern Hemisphere into the Southern Hemisphere. From that moment, autumn begins in the Northern Hemisphere, while spring begins in the Southern Hemisphere. Afterward, daylight hours gradually become shorter and nights longer in the Northern Hemisphere.

The change of seasons is not caused by changes in the distance between the Earth and the Sun, but by the Earth’s movement around the Sun and the inclination of its rotational axis at approximately 66.56° to the plane of its orbit. This inclination causes the angle at which the Sun’s rays strike the Earth’s surface to change throughout the year, resulting in the changing seasons.

In 2026, astronomical autumn will last 89 days, 21 hours, 45 minutes and 1 second, ending on December 22 with the winter solstice. From that moment, astronomical winter will begin in the Northern Hemisphere, while astronomical summer will begin in the Southern Hemisphere.
