The United Nations Security Council is holding an emergency session today to address soaring maritime security risks and escalating threats to commercial shipping lanes in the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Sea-news.az reports citing the Al-Hadath television channel and international diplomatic sources, that the high-level meeting was jointly initiated by France, Latvia, Greece, the United Kingdom, and Bahrain.

International anxiety regarding navigation safety across the Bab el-Mandeb and the broader southern Red Sea has surged following a series of aggressive maneuvers by Houthi forces along Yemen’s western coastline.

Recent intelligence reports indicate that Houthi units have successfully seized control of Perim Island (Bairim) located at the southern entrance of the Red Sea. Furthermore, local ground offensives have seen militants push deeper into areas surrounding the Zubab district along the western coast, alongside incursions onto several smaller islands dotting the vital maritime chokepoint.

The UN Security Council session is expected to evaluate immediate diplomatic and security responses to safeguard global supply chains, maintain freedom of navigation, and prevent severe disruptions to international trade connecting Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
