International CICA conference in Baku focuses on expanding Middle Corridor efficiency, port integration, and multimodal logistics targets

Baku is currently hosting the international conference titled “The Role of Ports in Regional Connectivity and Strategic Cooperation” under the framework of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA / AQEM).

Sea-news.az reports that the high-level gathering brought together prominent port authorities, maritime executives, and logistics leaders from across Asia to examine strategic pathways for accelerating the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor), optimizing inter-port cooperation, and scaling up multimodal transport efficiency.

Discussions during the sessions heavily emphasized the operational synergies gained by integrating the Baku International Sea Trade Port directly with Azerbaijan Railways (ADY), a structural step credited with significantly amplifying container handling throughput and streamlining transit velocity.

Highlighting ongoing growth metrics and future projections, conference delegates noted that building on robust container volumes handled over recent months, the Port of Baku targets a container throughput of approximately 121,000 TEU by the end of this year, scaling aggressively toward strategic medium-term benchmarks of 200,000 TEU, and reaching upwards of 300,000 TEU by the close of 2027.

Participants reaffirmed their joint commitment to deepening regional cooperation to reinforce Azerbaijan’s strategic transit position, ensuring the Middle Corridor evolves into a high-capacity, resilient, and globally competitive trade artery.
