Only 186 km from the Azerbaijani border
Transport expert Rauf Agamirzayev reports that the construction of a new grain terminal with an annual capacity of 1.5 million tons is planned at the port of Makhachkala. However, this is not merely a port project.
Behind the terminal lies the comprehensive enhancement of the railway, highway, and port connectivity. The development of road infrastructure linking Makhachkala with the Astrakhan–Makhachkala and Rostov–Baku highways is also part of this process.
These projects are likewise significant for the Western route of the International North–South Transport Corridor passing through Azerbaijan.
This is because the corridor’s efficiency depends not only on the infrastructure within Azerbaijan’s territory, but also on the ports, railways, and roads on both sides of the border operating as a unified logistics chain.
Considering that the distance between Makhachkala and the Azerbaijani border is a mere 186 kilometers, the infrastructure changes taking place here must be closely monitored from the perspective of regional transit.
