Two ships collided in Turkey: Missing persons reported — DETAILS

The document states that the Tuğberk İmamoğlu vessel sank after the collision off the coast of Silivri, Turkey, and its crew members are missing.

The report notes that at the time of the incident, an inexperienced second mate was on the bridge of the ALSU, neither the lookout nor the helmsman was at their post, and the captain was sleeping in his cabin.

The expert commission pointed out that the Automatic Identification System (AIS) on the Tuğberk İmamoğlu was either turned off, malfunctioning, or not operating adequately due to external interference, which is why the ALSU tanker could only be detected on radar at a distance of 1.8 miles.

The report emphasizes that the primary cause of the accident was a breach of discipline on the bridge and the complete disregard of watchkeeping rules. It is stated that while the maneuver by the Tuğberk İmamoğlu was the active factor that triggered the collision, the root cause of the incident turning into a tragedy lay in the serious shortcomings on the bridge of the ALSU tanker.
