A floating island covered with trees and vegetation has been spotted on Lake Williston in the Canadian province of British Columbia.
Sea-news.az reports that the phenomenon came to light after a local resident shared a video on social media during a boat trip. Although representatives of the energy company BC Hydro initially suspected the footage was generated by artificial intelligence, satellite images confirmed that the island is indeed real.
Visible from space on July 21 about 100 kilometers away from the dam, the green islet disappeared after a few days, only to reappear on August 31 in the Ospika River, which flows into the lake. Scientists suggest that the island is a mass of soil and root systems that detached from the shoreline as water levels rose.
Experts and scientists cannot yet precisely explain how this floating island formed. However, according to one theory, the reservoir filled with water for the first time in 14 years in early 2026. As a result, water levels rose, and a section of the shore—complete with roots, soil, and trees—likely broke away and began moving across the water’s surface.
Lake Williston is one of the largest lakes in the world, and the exact current location of this mysterious island remains unknown.
