Sweden is set to acquire four defense and intervention frigates from France in a major defense agreement valued at 4.3 billion euros.
Sea-news.az reports that the contract was signed in Stockholm by Pierre-Éric Pommellet, Chairman and CEO of shipbuilder Naval Group, and Mikael Granholm, Director-General of the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration.
This acquisition marks a major continuation of Sweden’s rearmament efforts following its accession to NATO in 2024. The first frigates are scheduled for delivery in 2030, and the new vessels will be equipped with advanced air defense systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.
In addition to the shipbuilding contract, the defense ministries of both nations signed a framework agreement aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in operational matters, defense capabilities, and industrial development. The signing ceremony was attended by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and French President Emmanuel Macron.
