A consultative meeting dedicated to the environmental initiatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Caspian region has been held at the Kazakhstan Caspian Sea Research Institute. Important projects focused on protecting the region’s aquatic biodiversity and preventing pollution were discussed during the gathering.
Sea-news.az reports citing the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, that three key UNDP projects targeting the region’s primary environmental challenges took center stage at the meeting. A project funded by the Global Environment Facility focuses on ecosystem preservation, sustainable management of land and water resources, and the implementation of nature-based solutions in the Atyrau and Mangystau regions.
Two other initiatives are directed toward advancing the circular economy, improving waste management systems, and preventing plastic pollution in the Caspian Sea. It was highlighted that the government of Japan, in partnership with UNDP, has allocated dedicated financial resources to a project aimed at strengthening environmental monitoring, reinforcing regional cooperation, and enhancing data exchange within the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea.
