August 21 is observed worldwide as the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism. This significant day aims to honor the memory of the thousands of innocent people who have lost their lives or suffered injuries as a result of terrorist acts, to show support for survivors, and to advocate for the protection of their fundamental rights.

Sea-news.az notes that this day was established by a resolution of the UN General Assembly on December 19, 2017. After the initial wave of a terrorist attack subsides, victims are frequently sidelined and forgotten. Only a small number of countries possess the adequate resources required for the full rehabilitation, as well as the psychological and financial recovery, of those affected.

The United Nations emphasizes that supporting terrorism victims and defending their rights is, first and foremost, a direct obligation of member states. Within the framework of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, technical assistance is provided to member states, civil society organizations, and victim associations, aiding in the establishment of networks dedicated to their rehabilitation.
