For the first time in approximately 90 years, an Atlantic bluefin tuna has been caught in the North Sea.
Sea-news.az reports citing The Telegraph, that the crew of the fishing vessel Dominator caught a tuna weighing 338 kilograms near the fishing port of Whitby in North Yorkshire, Great Britain. According to eyewitnesses, the giant fish even caused the vessel to list to one side. The crew members were thrilled with the catch, which is reportedly set to be sold to restaurants in Great Britain.
This is the first tuna caught in the area since 1939. Although these giant fish were once frequently seen off British coasts, the species completely disappeared from the North Sea in the 1960s. Historically, a 386-kilogram tuna was caught near Whitby in 1933, which remains Britain’s recorded rod-and-reel record for tuna fishing.
Over the past decade, bluefin tuna have begun returning in large shoals to the southwestern coasts of the British Isles. Experts attribute the growth in this species’ population to the warming of waters in the North Sea.
