The cause behind the water turning green in Lake Boyukshor has been determined.
Sea-news.az reports that this was stated in an announcement by the State Control Service for Water Use and Protection under the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency.
The statement noted that on August 14, water samples were taken from Lake Boyukshor and analyzed to investigate the causes of the water turning green.
“Based on the analysis results, it was determined that the water sample had a pungent odor, a green color, and was in the form of a thick, slow-settling substance,” the statement reads.
“Microscopic examination of the sample revealed an excessive presence of blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria). The detected algae groups can typically make the water sample appear green or sometimes brownish-green.
Due to seasonal temperature increases, as well as an increase in the amount of biogenic elements (total nitrogen and phosphorus) in the water, biochemical processes occurring in the water were accelerated, creating optimal conditions for a sharp increase in the population density of toxic cyanobacteria.”
