Critical water level on the Danube, Europes second-longest river

Ivica Dacic, Serbia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs, has described the current water level in the Danube River as the lowest in the past 100 to 150 years while inspecting a fire-rescue ship near the village of Dubovac.

Sea-news.az reports that the drop in water levels on the Danube has also affected the Danube-Tisa-Danube canal, from which firefighters draw water to extinguish fires.

To reduce the burden on local water supplies, government authorities deployed a fire-rescue vessel capable of filling 24 fire engines with water simultaneously. This is the first time such a vessel has been deployed to combat wildfires in Serbia.

A total of 32 fires have broken out across Serbia. In the Deliblato Sands area, the flames engulfed approximately 2,500 to 3,000 hectares. Nearly 300 personnel, 72 automotive vehicles, 37 special equipment units, and three helicopters were deployed to extinguish the fire. Dacic stated that there were no fatalities and no damage to infrastructure.
