Every year on August 10, World Lion Day is observed around the world to draw attention to the sharp decline in the number of lions, the loss of their natural habitats, and the necessity of protecting these animals.

Sea-news.az reports that, according to data from researchers at the University of Oxford, the population of African lions has decreased by approximately 75 percent over the past 50 years. Based on a study published in 2022, while the lion population in Africa was approximately 92,000 individuals in the 1970s, this figure has now sharply dropped.

According to estimates by Oxford University specialists, 92 percent of the lions’ historical habitats have already disappeared. The decline in the population is primarily driven by the shrinking of natural ranges, human-wildlife conflicts, and illegal hunting (poaching). World Lion Day has become a globally widespread environmental awareness movement aimed at preventing the extinction of this species.
