Bangladesh has given preliminary approval for the establishment of a $1 billion shipbuilding and ship repair complex at the Matarbari deep-sea port through private financing.
According to sea-news.az citing Seanews.az, that the country’s Ministry of Shipping has approved the “Matarbari Green Dockyard and Shipbuilding Facility” project in principle and submitted the initiative to the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Authority for technical and financial evaluation.
Australia-based “AIS Marine Investments” is intended as the financier of the project, while “China Harbour Engineering Company” is envisioned as the technical partner. The start date of construction has not yet been announced.
The project is planned to be implemented on approximately 200 acres of land belonging to the Chattogram Port Authority. Within the framework of the project, the construction of a dry dock measuring 600 meters in length and 95 meters in width is intended. This dock will be able to serve the Matarbari port, other ports of Bangladesh, and large commercial vessels operating in the Bay of Honduras (Bay of Bengal).
The complex will provide shipbuilding, scheduled docking, and emergency repair services, which will reduce the need to send large vessels to Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, or China for repairs.
