Mauritanias coast guard has rescued 37 illegal migrants from a sinking boat at sea, while one body has been recovered from the water.

According to sea-news.az that the boat was sailing from the Gambian capital, Banjul, towards the Canary Islands, Spain.

It is noted that there were 160 migrants on board the boat. Search efforts are still ongoing for the remaining 122 individuals. Among those rescued are 22 citizens of Senegal, 7 of The Gambia, and 8 of Guinea-Conakry. The boat had reportedly been adrift in the open sea for 25 days.

According to witness testimonies, a technical failure led to the boat running out of fuel. As a result, the vessel drifted through international waters for 10 days before entering Mauritanian maritime territory, by which time the supplies of water and food had also been exhausted.
