Dubai’s “DP World,” one of the world’s largest port operators, plans to create a new seaport in the Persian Gulf that will allow cargo to be transported while bypassing the Strait of Hormuz.
According to sea-news.az that, according to information from Financial Times sources, the project envisions the construction of a new multi-purpose seaport and terminal in the Emirate of Fujairah, on the coast of the Gulf of Oman, in the Arabian Sea.
Currently, for ships departing from the Jebel Ali port in Dubai—the regional hub of “DP World”—to reach the open ocean, they must pass through the Strait of Hormuz. However, due to tensions between the US and Iran, security risks in this strait remain high. Building a new port in Fujairah, located on the other side of the Strait of Hormuz, would allow cargo to be transported by land directly from Dubai and other Gulf countries, thereby eliminating dependence on the strait.
“DP World” is currently in negotiations with the Fujairah authorities regarding the financing and implementation timeline of the project. Sources close to the company’s management suggest that the new port could be built within approximately a year and a half.
