Amid the military and political tension between Iran and the U.S. in the Strait of Hormuz, official Tehran continues to issue sharp statements regarding the strategic waterway.
According to sea-news.az that Hassan Ghashghavi, a member of the Iranian Parliament, has defended his country’s actions and recent military moves in the strait.
The Iranian deputy noted that the measures taken by Tehran in the Strait of Hormuz are fully compliant with international law. Condemning the recent U.S. strikes on targets in Iran, Ghashghavi emphasized that Washington’s actions are entirely contrary to the principles of the UN Charter:
“We are always ready for cooperation and dialogue with our friendly neighbors, especially Oman, but these negotiations do not mean relinquishing the right to sovereignty.”
According to Hassan Ghashghavi, the situation regarding the management and security architecture of the Strait of Hormuz will not return to the previous status quo. He asserted that control over the maritime routes in the region will remain in Tehran’s hands. “Regardless of whether the management is carried out in cooperation with Oman or independently, the control of this waterway will be within Iran’s jurisdiction.”
It should be recalled that the military situation in the region reached a critical point after U.S. military forces conducted air and missile strikes on approximately 140 military targets within Iranian territory on the night leading into Sunday. In response, the Iranian side launched a series of attacks with missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on American military facilities and bases located in Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar.
Currently, commercial vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s largest oil transit routes, has been completely halted, and global logistics companies are closely monitoring the course of the crisis.
