The Qatari-owned liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker Al Rekayyat is facing a serious risk of explosion due to a fire that broke out in its engine room following an attack on the vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the agency, the ship sustained significant damage, and the crew has been evacuated. The tanker was attacked on its port side while transiting the strait along the coast of Oman, after which it issued a distress signal.
Reuters noted that a Saudi Arabian crude oil tanker was also damaged as a result of a missile attack carried out overnight on July 7. Previously, the Iranian state broadcasting corporation, IRIB, had reported that the Qatari tanker was attempting to pass through the strait under the escort of the U.S. Navy. According to the corporation, the tanker “became a target for the attack because it ignored repeated warnings.”
