Egypt Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has announced an increase in additional transit surcharges for most vessel categories, effective 15 July.
According to sea-news.az the new measures will raise costs for tankers, gas carriers, bulk carriers, and other cargo vessels transiting the canal.
The largest increases will apply to oil and petroleum product tankers:
- Loaded tankers: surcharge increased from 25% to 37%
- Ballast (empty) tankers: surcharge increased from 15% to 27%
- LNG carriers: surcharge increased from 7% to 19%
- LPG carriers and chemical tankers: surcharge increased from 20% to 32%
At the same time:
- The additional surcharge for container ships will remain at 12%
- Passenger vessel tariffs will remain unchanged
The SCA stated that these additional charges may be reviewed in the future based on market conditions and developments in the global shipping industry. The surcharges could be adjusted upward, reduced, or removed depending on circumstances.
The decision is expected to have a direct impact on shipping costs and trade routes using one of the world’s most important maritime corridors.
