A U.S. Navy sailor has been killed at the Newport News Shipbuilding yard in Virginia, where the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy is currently under construction.

According to sea-news.az the information was reported by the U.S. Naval Institute’s news portal.

Following the incident, another sailor was detained in connection with a “firearm-related incident,” although no formal charges have yet been filed. An investigation into the circumstances of the death is ongoing.

The deceased servicemember had been assigned to the aircraft carrier since March 2025.

Although the vessel has not yet been fully completed, it was reported that the ship’s crew consisted of at least 43 sailors as of 2019. Construction of the USS John F. Kennedy began in 2015. While the ship was initially expected to enter service in 2025, the timeline has since been extended to March 2027. Sea trials are scheduled to begin in early 2026.
