Every year on June 8, the world celebrates World Oceans Day. The observance originated from an initiative proposed at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
According to sea-news.az oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, produce at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, and serve as a primary source of food for more than one billion people. Oceans are also a vital component of the global economy, with nearly 40 million people expected to be employed in ocean-related sectors by 2030.
The theme of World Oceans Day 2026 is “Rethink.” The United Nations emphasizes the importance of protecting the oceans, reducing pollution, and preserving marine ecosystems for future generations.
Experts note that climate change, pollution, overfishing, and increasing human activity in coastal areas remain among the greatest threats to ocean sustainability. For this reason, strengthening international cooperation and expanding scientific research are considered essential.
