Chinas Jiangnan Shipyard has unveiled a new molten salt reactor (MSR)-based fourth-generation nuclear-powered container shipping concept.
According to sea-news.az the company stated that the project envisions not only nuclear-powered container vessels but also an integrated zero-emission deep-sea logistics ecosystem. The concept includes MSR-powered ocean-going container ships, nuclear-powered tugboats, electric feeder vessels, floating power generation platforms, and green ammonia-fueled feeder ships.
The project also proposes nuclear-powered electricity and green fuel production, as well as a dedicated terminal for container transshipment. The system is designed with a modular structure that can be adapted to the varying demands of major ports and global shipping routes.
Jiangnan Shipyard emphasized that molten salt reactors offer high safety standards and the potential for zero-carbon emissions. The shipyard has previously introduced nuclear-powered ultra-large container ship concepts, some of which have already received Approval in Principle (AiP) from classification societies.
