The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Maritime Safety Committee has incorporated the VDES data exchange system, based on VHF technology, into the international regulatory framework.
The new regulations are expected to enter into force on January 1, 2028.
VDES is designed as an alternative to the widely used Automatic Identification System (AIS). The new technology enables faster, higher-capacity, and more secure data transmission. Through its authentication features, the system also helps reduce the risk of falsified vessel tracking information.
During the 111th session of the IMO Maritime Safety Committee, updated VDES performance standards for shipborne equipment and implementation guidelines were adopted. Amendments to the SOLAS Convention will allow the voluntary use of VDES as an alternative to AIS.
The Committee also approved updates related to the Long-Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) system. According to IMO, the changes will facilitate access to vessel tracking data and strengthen capabilities in maritime security, search and rescue operations, and marine pollution response.
