IMO adopts new code for autonomous ships

156

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted the MASS (Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships) safety code for autonomous vessels engaged in international shipping.

Currently advisory in nature, the code is expected to become mandatory from 2028. The document establishes the first international standards for the safe operation of unmanned and autonomous ships.

Safe navigation is identified as the top priority of the code. This includes continuous environmental monitoring, compliance with collision prevention regulations, and the ability to conduct remote or automated control during emergency situations.

The new regulations also cover technical requirements for crewless vessels related to fire protection, watertight integrity, lifesaving systems, towing operations, and anchoring procedures.

According to the IMO, the implementation of autonomous shipping technologies and the development of international standards will continue progressively over the coming years.
