The Korean Register (KR), in cooperation with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries, has introduced a new digital guideline for calculating the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI).
The document establishes a unified methodology based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and offers an alternative approach to physical model testing in assessing vessel energy efficiency.
Under the new methodology, ship performance will be analyzed through computer simulations. This approach aims to reduce emissions already at the design stage and evaluate the effectiveness of innovative solutions such as air lubrication systems and wind-assisted propulsion technologies.
The new standards are expected to accelerate the maritime industry’s alignment with international environmental requirements.
