DNK introduces new navigation safety system for shipping

Norway’s war risk insurer, Den Norske Krigsforsikring for Skib (DNK), has launched a new safety programme designed to counter GNSS signal interference and spoofing in maritime navigation.

The initiative is presented as the first insurance-linked Alternative Positioning, Navigation and Timing (A-PNT) programme in the shipping industry.

Under the project, member companies will gain access to technologies based on the low-Earth-orbit satellite network operated by Iridium Communications. Vessels using the system will also be eligible for insurance discounts.

According to DNK, incidents of GNSS jamming and spoofing have increased significantly in recent years, particularly in the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the Red Sea.

The new technology is designed to detect signal interference and spoofing attempts while providing crews with more reliable navigation data.
