Anchoring restrictions at port trigger operational disruption

The U.S. Coast Guard has prohibited the use of “Mediterranean-style mooring” (med-mooring) for the cargo vessels Water Spirit 2 and Admiral Pride at Berth 10 of the Port of San Juan, citing safety concerns.

According to Coast Guard official Luis X. Rodriguez, the method creates significant navigational constraints in the narrow shipping channel, disrupting the movement of cruise ships and other vessels.

Non-compliance with the order may result in penalties of up to $120,000 per day for vessel operators.

Due to the lack of alternative berthing options, operations of the affected Ro-Ro vessels have been suspended. This has already caused disruptions in the regional supply chain, particularly affecting the United States Virgin Islands.

The Virgin Islands Port Authority has warned that the suspension of services could lead to serious logistical challenges for local residents and businesses.
