An anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel under charter by Petrobras has run aground approximately 80 nautical miles northeast of Rio de Janeiro.

The vessel, identified as the “Skandi Amazonas,” built in 2010, struck a rocky seabed while underway during nighttime operations. According to the Brazilian Navy, the impact caused hull damage and water ingress. To reduce the risk of sinking or capsizing, the captain intentionally grounded the vessel.

The incident occurred near the Praya Campista region, an area known for its long coastline and tourism facilities.

There were 29 people on board at the time of the accident. Twelve crew members were evacuated to nearby vessels, while 17 remained on board to assist with stabilisation and rescue preparations.

Reports indicate that after the collision, the starboard engine room was flooded, resulting in the failure of the starboard propulsion system.
