Findings released on Bayesian yacht disaster

A court-commissioned expert report, prepared at the request of Italian prosecutors, has been made public regarding the sinking of the superyacht Bayesian, one of the most widely reported maritime accidents of 2024.

According to the report, the primary causes of the sinking were attributed not to weather conditions, but to crew errors in vessel handling, incorrect interpretation of weather forecasts, and the failure to activate safety systems in time. Prosecutors stated that the storm encountered at the time was not entirely uncontrollable and that proper maneuvering could have potentially prevented the disaster.

However, the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) reached a different conclusion. British investigators found that the yacht’s technical design and mast configuration significantly increased the risk of capsizing in wind speeds exceeding 63 knots. The report also noted that this vulnerability was not adequately reflected in the vessel’s stability documentation.

The accident claimed the lives of seven people, including technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch. Following the incident, the captain and two crew members have been placed under investigation on suspicion of manslaughter by negligence.
