China has built the first ship with a capacity of 10,800 vehicles, powered by two types of fuel. Constructed for the South Korean shipping company HHM, the vessel is currently considered the largest car carrier in the world.
The ship, named “Glovis Leader,” was built at the Guangzhou shipyard of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation and was officially delivered into service on April 28.
With a length of 230 meters and a width of 40 meters, the vessel is equipped with 14 cargo decks. This allows it to efficiently load a wide range of vehicles, including electric and hydrogen-powered cars, as well as heavy-duty trucks.
In addition, the ship is fitted with an advanced green fuel system that fully complies with the latest global environmental standards.
Technical manager Can Fuli stated that the vessel operates on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and diesel fuel. It is also equipped with a power generation system capable of independently supplying energy to the entire ship during operation, which is one of its key advantages in terms of energy efficiency.
“We have also completed preliminary feasibility studies on switching to ammonia and methanol fuels. This will allow the vessel to be modified to operate on these alternative fuels if required by the shipowner,” Can Fuli added.
