Although 5 people from the 19-member team want to return to the country, they are not allowed
On July 21, 2023, the crew of nineteen Azerbaijanis of the “The Angel” container ship, which sank near the port of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, cannot return to the country.
Tural Gasimov, the ship’s cook, told Meydan TV about this.
According to him, they have been detained in Taiwan for three months and are not allowed to return to Azerbaijan.
Tural Gasimov says that they have signed a six-month contract with “Zulu Shipping” company, which carries out the technical operation of the ship:
“This company belongs to Dubai and has an office in Azerbaijan. An employee of the company, Tavvakkul Guliyev, invited me to work, and I agreed. After signing the contract with the company, we left Azerbaijan on May 27. We arrived in Sri Lanka, where we stayed in a hotel. We left on June 1st and arrived at the port of Dalian, China. On the way back, the ship was wrecked. In the morning of July 20, a ship carrying 19 Azerbaijanis began to sink near the port of Kaohsiung. The ship’s crew members were evacuated. We have been living as hostages here for three months now, they are keeping us as hostages.
According to the complainant, the sailors are currently accommodated in one of the hotels in Kaohsiung:
“After the ship sank, an investigation was started in Taiwan. The sailors were forbidden to leave the hotel during the investigation. The company covers all our expenses. He pays our salaries on time every month. But I and four other sailors want to return to Azerbaijan, to our country.”
Ilham Nasirov, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Seamen’s Support Public Union, told Meydan TV that on October 11, the seamen in Taiwan were contacted:
“The sailors say that the migration service did not let them leave the hotel. In fact, the crew should be released after receiving the initial statement. In this regard, we have officially applied to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, the State Security Service, the State Maritime and Port Agency, and received a positive response. In a short time, we will succeed in returning those five people to the country.”
