The first stage of reclamation of the Koshkar-Ata tailing dump has started

The first stage of reclamation of the Koshkar-Ata tailing dump has begun in Mangystau Oblast. The project received support from the Government of the country at the beginning of this year. 15.5 billion tenge has been allocated from the republican budget for reclamation work for 3 years, Kazinform MIA reports with reference to the Instagram account of the regional akimat.

“Today, about 372 thousand people live in the ecological zone. The Koshkar-Ata tailing dump is located at a distance of 7-8 km from the Caspian Sea and 3-4 km from Aktau. Its area is 77 sq. km. Waste is placed on 66 sq. km. Solving the problem of a radioactive and toxic lake requires an early start because of the serious danger to residents of nearby settlements, ”the akimat said.

According to experts, the reclamation process will take about 3 years. The works will be carried out by JSC “Pavlodar River Port”.

“In the process of reclamation, the decontamination area is completely leveled, the surface is covered with 30 cm thick fill soil. By the end of this year, more than 4 thousand hectares of territory will be reclaimed,” said D. Kusbekov, head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management of the Mangystau Region.

Note that 100 million tenge was allocated at the expense of the republican budget for 2020. On December 13, 2019, a competition was announced, according to the results of which Pavlodar River Port JSC was determined as the winner, and on March 13, 2020, an agreement No. 65 was concluded in the amount of 15.5 billion tenge.

However, the project was suspended due to the fact that potential suppliers did not agree with the results of the competition and went to court. In this regard, the allocated funds in the amount of 100 million tenge were returned to the republican budget, the department said.
