The German water police detained a 177-metre dry cargo ship, sailing under the Panama flag. The vessel moored to the pier in the port city of Bremerhaven, which, together with Bremen, 60 kilometres from it, forms the land of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.

The investigators found on board the ship a gross violation of environmental standards. As waste on the ship were oil products. According to the rules, it is strictly forbidden to enter German ports with such wastes.

The German water police opened a criminal case and detained the captain of the ship, a 53-year-old Azerbaijani citizen. Currently, he has been released on bail of 10 thousand euros.

Investigators note that environmental crimes in Germany only seem harmless at first glance, but they are punished with severe penalties. The court will determine the fate of the cargo ship and the Azerbaijani captain.
