A resident of Darwin, Australia, unexpectedly landed a massive financial windfall while out on a fishing trip.

Sea-news.az reports citing The Guardian.

26-year-old Matthew Morris went on a fishing trip with his brother, who was visiting from overseas. According to Morris, the outing was simply an excuse to catch up and spend quality time together. While chatting with his brother, Morris unexpectedly reeled in an 80 cm barramundi (white sea bass) bearing a red tag.

It turned out that the organizers of the “Million Dollar Fish” competition had released one hundred tagged barramundi into local waterways. Catching one of the standard tagged fish offered a prize of 10,000 Australian dollars ($6,960 USD). However, the angler who caught the fish carrying the red tag was entitled to the grand prize of 1 million Australian dollars ($696,000 USD).

Remarkably, the winner was completely unaware of the magnitude of his catch and had not even officially registered for the tournament beforehand.

The fortunate angler stated that he plans to use the prize money to purchase a new home.
