Lake Balaton, Hungary’s most famous resort destination, could divide into three separate bodies of water by the end of the century.
Sea-news.az reports that hydraulic engineer Bence Fülöp shared this projection during a nature conservation conference held in Tihany.
Citing a climate model developed in 2024, he noted that the lake’s water balance could deteriorate significantly in the final years of the 21st century. The expert emphasized that this is a probabilistic scenario rather than a definitive forecast. However, maintaining the lake’s current dimensions in the future may require substantial and continuous water replenishment.
A drop in the lake’s water level was observed this summer. Water levels also receded in another lake in Tihany known as the “Inner Lake,” resulting in mass fish mortality. Fülöp highlighted that construction around the lake shoreline could accelerate these environmental processes, calling for the urgent protection of natural zones.
