Two supertankers attempting an unauthorized passage through the southern section of the Strait of Hormuz have struck marine mines and been disabled.

Sea-news.az reports that a statement regarding the matter was issued by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the elite branch of the Iranian Armed Forces.

The statement indicates that the vessels, attempting to traverse via the unpermitted southern route of the strait, struck marine mines. As a result of powerful explosions and fire, the tankers’ engine compartments were disabled, rendering them immobile.

According to reports, the tankers were carrying a combined total of over 4.5 million barrels of crude oil. Following the incident, the vessels’ crews were evacuated, and the tankers were abandoned off the southern coast of the Strait of Hormuz.
