International Day of the Girl Child Observed Worldwide

October 11 is observed globally as the International Day of the Girl Child. The day was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2011 to recognize girls’ rights and highlight the unique challenges they face worldwide.

Sea-news.az reports out of 1 billion young people globally today, 600 million are adolescent girls. However, girls continue to face gender discrimination and barriers in accessing education, healthcare, and social opportunities. UNESCO reports that while global school enrollment for girls has increased from 73% to 89% since 1995, approximately 133 million girls remain out of school.

This year, the theme for International Day of the Girl Child is “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights.” Advocates emphasize that investing in girls’ safety, quality education, and empowerment serves as the cornerstone for a more equitable and prosperous future.
