October 1 marks the 108th anniversary of the establishment of prosecution bodies in Azerbaijan and the professional holiday of prosecution employees.

Sea-news.az reports founded 108 years ago, the Prosecution Service of Azerbaijan has navigated various historical stages to evolve into one of today’s modern law enforcement institutions. This trajectory is defined by key milestones of state-building, the restoration of national independence, legal reforms, and the restoration of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.

The history of the Prosecution Service of Azerbaijan dates back to October 1, 1918, during the period of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. In subsequent years, the prosecution system underwent various phases, and following the restoration of independence, a new era of development commenced in its operations.

The Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, adopted in 1995, defined the prosecution service as a unified, centralized body subordinate to the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Law “On the Prosecution Service,” enacted in 1999, further clarified its areas of responsibility. As a result of the 2002 referendum, the prosecution service was also granted the right of legislative initiative.

By the Decree of National Leader Heydar Aliyev dated July 17, 1998, October 1 was officially established as the Professional Holiday of Prosecution Employees of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

As a result of legal and institutional reforms implemented during the years of independence, the material and technical infrastructure of the Prosecution Service of Azerbaijan has been strengthened, management mechanisms refined, modern information technologies integrated, and the “Electronic Prosecution” information system established.

Under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, significant measures have been taken to align the activities of prosecution bodies with modern standards, enhance employee professionalism, and ensure the reliable protection of citizens’ rights and freedoms.

Following the 2020 Patriotic War, new mandates were defined for prosecution authorities. Key priorities include restoring prosecution operations across liberated territories, safeguarding law and order, and investigating war crimes committed during the conflict.

International cooperation within the Prosecution Service of Azerbaijan has also expanded in recent years. Emphasis remains focused on bilateral knowledge exchanges with foreign law enforcement agencies and international organizations, alongside joint efforts in combating corruption and transnational crime.

On the eve of the professional holiday, President Ilham Aliyev signed decrees conferring higher special and military ranks upon a group of prosecution officers, alongside bestowing various state medals—a testament to the high value placed by the state on the dedication of personnel in this field.

The evolutionary path of the Prosecution Service of Azerbaijan, initiated 108 years ago, continues to progress today. While times and challenges evolve, the core mission of the prosecution service remains steadfast: serving to reliably safeguard statehood traditions, the rule of law, and fundamental human rights and freedoms.

We congratulate the personnel of the Prosecution Service of Azerbaijan on their 108th anniversary and professional holiday, wishing them continued success in their vital responsibilities.
