Every year, September 29 is celebrated as World Heart Day.

Sea-news.az reports that the primary objective of this day is the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, raising public awareness regarding risk factors, and encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular diseases remain one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Heart attacks and strokes account for 85 percent of fatalities caused by these conditions.

Cardiovascular diseases encompass various pathologies of the heart and blood vessels, including coronary, cerebrovascular, rheumatic, and congenital heart diseases.

Experts point out that the primary risk factors include tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, harmful use of alcohol, high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar and cholesterol levels, as well as overweight and obesity. Air pollution is also among the factors that heighten the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

According to WHO data, a significant portion of cardiovascular diseases can be prevented by managing risk factors. To achieve this, it is recommended to quit tobacco, reduce the intake of salt and other unhealthy foods, consume more fruits and vegetables, remain regularly physically active, and monitor blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels.

Cardiovascular diseases can develop over a long period without manifesting any symptoms. Therefore, undergoing regular medical check-ups, detecting risk factors early, and initiating timely treatment are of paramount importance.
