The judicial and investigative proceedings regarding the “Filo Jet” vessel tragedy, which occurred on August 30 off the coast of Girne in Northern Cyprus, are ongoing.

Sea-news.az reports that three citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan—Rashad Ibrahimov, Gadir Guliyev, and Valeh Humbatov—were among the vessel’s crew at the time of the disaster. It was noted that they worked on board as a seaman, greaser, and support staff member, respectively.

The court proceedings for the 9 individuals detained in connection with the incident are continuing. At the court hearing held on September 25, it was decided to extend their police custody for an additional 7 days.

According to information provided by the police in court, statements have been taken from more than 320 individuals so far as part of the investigation. The investigation focuses on the technical condition of the vessel, particularly damage reported to have occurred to the bow stem on June 17 and the subsequent repair works.

It is currently being examined whether that damage and the repairs carried out contributed to the sinking of the ship. Simultaneously, investigators are determining whether relevant authorities were notified of the repairs and how many voyages the ship made after being repaired.

It is reported that 239 people were rescued as a result of the disaster, 15 bodies were recovered, and 13 individuals remain missing. Underwater searches are currently ongoing. The vessel “Optimus Prime” is conducting operations to locate the ship’s black box and VDR (Voyage Data Recorder).

As part of the investigation, 17 ship parts brought ashore are planned to be sent for expert examination, and investigations are also scheduled to be conducted in Turkey, including at a ship repair facility in Adana.

The Azerbaijan-Cyprus Friendship Society stated that it is keeping the comprehensive and objective investigation into all causes and circumstances of the tragedy, as well as the protection of the rights of Rashad Ibrahimov, Gadir Guliyev, and Valeh Humbatov, under close attention.

It should be noted that the guilt of the detained individuals has not been established by a final, legally binding court verdict.
